Dr. Charles A. Soma, MD
Born and raised in Southern California, Dr. Soma remained in the Los Angeles area for training, attending UC Irvine where he walked on to the baseball team and became a 3-year starter. He participated in biomechanical research in Orthopedic Surgery, studying femur fractures, while competing at a Division I level and was drafted in the 4th round by the Montreal Expos.
He completed a general internship at LA County USC Medical Center and an Orthopedic Surgery Residency at USC, with specialty rotations in Pediatric Orthopedics at LA Children’s Hospital and Orthopedic Trauma during the height of LA’s gang violence and the Rodney King riots.
Dr. Soma was then accepted into the Sports Medicine Fellowship at Santa Monica Orthopedic Group, where he trained under Dr. Bert Mandelbaum, treated Pepperdine University athletes, and traveled with the U.S. Soccer Team during the 1994 World Cup campaign. His fellowship focused on advanced cartilage restoration and arthroscopic ligament reconstruction.
In 1998 he moved to Maui to begin his orthopedic practice, where he continues to provide orthopedic care to both residents and visitors of Maui, treating patients of all ages. His specialties include sports injuries of the knee and shoulder, hand and wrist injuries and surgery, and regenerative medicine using platelet-rich plasma, amniotic tissue grafts, and bone marrow concentrate for arthritis treatment.
